The SofaF1 2008 Championship Pole Poll

In theory there should really have been more teams in the run up to this but unfortunately a major project is being launched at work this week and so it's all gone a bit wrong.

So what's this all about?

Each Friday we ask you to predict your top eight drivers for the race and who you think will get pole.

You get 4 points if you get the race winner correct and two points if you get any other position or the pole correct. This year you get one point for a near miss in the race (eg. a driver in second you predicted to win gives you a point).*

Anyone can play. And the first part of the game is the hardest part of all - predicting the whole championship. So what we'd like from you is how the top eight drivers will finish the championship. And which driver will get the most poles. It's important to get it right because these count for double.

Good luck and Scott Speed.**

* For those of you who played last year there are two changes. No near miss point for poll. And you don't get two points if the person you predicted to win comes second - just one.

** I wish that joke still worked.

Comments:
Okay I'll be first to go for it.

So most poles this year will be Lewis Hamilton

The championship order will be:

1. Raikkonen
2. Hamilton
3. Kovalainen
4. Massa
5. Rosberg
6. Alonso
7. Kubica
8. Kakajima

Or something like that.

At the risk of looking like i'm following the herd, I reckon Raikkonen has to be the favourite for the title again.

Most poles: Hamilton

1. Raikkonen
2. Hamilton
3. Kovalainen
4. Massa
5. Rosberg
6. Alonso
7. Heidfeld
8. Piquet

Here we go then. For most poles:

Hamilton.

And then:

1. Hamilton
2. Raikkonen
3. Massa
4. Kovalainen
5. Alonso
6. Rosberg
7. Coulthard
8. Kubica

Erm...

Most poles: Raikkonen

Championship:

1. Raikkonen
2. Hamilton
3. Massa
4. Kovalainen
5. Alonso
6. Heidfeld
7. Kubica
8. Piquet

I'm a newby, and your token female. However bearded stew will vouch for my authenticity as a proper F1 nut. So here goes:

Most poles - Hamilton

Championship Order:
1. Raikkonen
2. Hamilton
3. Massa
4. Kovalainen
5. Heidfeld
6. Kubica
7. Alonso
8. Rosberg

Bring it on, I'm so excited I can't sleep - which is great for the first race of course.

Why does everyone think Raikkonen will win?!

Everyone except you of course. This probably gives you the edge come season end.

I just think Ferrari are faster and Kimi is on a mission.

I very nearly went for Lewis though.

Oh and great to see a new contributor GrifF1!

Welcome and good luck withe the Pole Poll

It does seem the Ferrari has a tenth or two, but this can be recovered, and I think Lewis is the one on the mission! Either I've made a terrible error, or a stroke of genius!

I think, and I don't know why, the McLaren is going to be less reliable this season.

Alex is right; if Hamilton does it you'll be revealed as the genius you (and him) are. But I think McLaren's garage position* might come into play.

If Kimi does win, looking at the very similar predictions we'll all be battling for points at 5,6,7 and 8. Could be very close! Long way to go and looking forward to some Sato craziness to while away the between race blues (are they having the long gaps again or has Bernie pulled some more strings?)

* is that the right term? Still a hint of newbie over here...

On another note, Kakajima? Masked alter-ego of a certain highly-rated Brazilian midfielder?

You never see them in the same room; I think we should be told...

Anyone contemplating the development of the championship in relation to McLaren's garage position can surely no longer be called a newbie?!

And, yes, nevermind Sato, I'm looking forward to some crazy Nakajima action! (P.S. is this racisim?)

I don't think so. Sato is crazy - fact. And Nakajima did run over several of his pit crew last year so I think we're safe.

I notice I'm the only one who's put him in my top 8 though!

PS. McLaren have been given a special compensation and are actually in garage position 5 rather than at the back. Ferrari might protest this but technically it's not a sporting rule but rather an ecclestone one. He clearly didn't want to walk all the way down the other end. They are just ahead of Red Bull who apparently were persuaded that it was a good idea.

What? That's scandalous. You can't impose a penalty and then change your mind. That would be like the guy in charge just making it up as he went alo...oh.

Hmmm. I might have just gone for Lewis to win if I'd known. I was banking on some pit lane antics from the other teams. Bah.

Well the penalty is that they have lost their championship points and had a fine.

Bernie usually uses last years standing to determine pit order, but he doesn't have to.

You can of course change your mind. Up until qualifying tonight!

I dunno. Never change your first opinion they say. But this is new information. I'll make a call this evening.

OK, after careful contemplation (and getting Freyja to pick names out of a hat), I have decided to switch allegiance. Lewis #1 it is. I'm not sure whether the garage malarky would have affected qualifying (would it?) so I'll stick with Kimi for most poles, as nobody else has that combination. Tactical, eh? :)

Most poles: Raikkonen

Championship:

1. Hamilton
2. Raikkonen
3. Massa
4. Kovalainen
5. Alonso
6. Heidfeld
7. Kubica
8. Piquet

(And should I delete my original prediction comment, to make it less confusing?)

Better late than never...

Most Poles: Raikkonen

1. Hamilton
2. Raikkonen
3. Kovalainen
4. Massa
5. Kubica
6. Rosberg
7. Button
8. Coulthard
