Appointment to view

So it's a grand prix weekend coming up. What's you experience like?

Fill in our handy set of questions or ignore them completely.

Do you watch qualifying? Do you watch the race?

Do you watch both of them live?

Even if they're really early in the morning?

What do you do about food and drink?

Is food acceptable during the race?

What about the live timing screen do you have that up?

Do you allow talking about non race subjects?

Do you allow talking at all during the race?

We'd love to hear your race setup. Especially if you're one of our lurkers here. It can be as long or as short as you like.

Comments:
Do you watch qualifying?

Yes

Do you watch the race?

Yes

Do you watch both of them live?

I try and watch them both live. But I'm more likely to be watching qualifying recorded because if I need to be flexible it's better to make the concession on the Saturday rather than the Sunday.

Even if they're really early in the morning?

I'll watch the race live regardless of the time pretty much. But the only race I missed watching live was last years Hungarian Grand Prix. In fact if all of the fly away races tend to make it a guaranteed watch because I'm usually not required to be doing something else that early in the morning or at dinner time. But the middle of the day can be more tricky.

What do you do about food and drink?

If the race program starts after mid day then I'll probably have a beer or three during the race. If it's in the morning I'll have coffee. Except for the Australian Grand Prix where there's a tradition of staying up all night and keeping on drinking through. Actually the Australian Grand Prix tends to mean beer and coffee at the same time!

Is food acceptable during the race?

It is acceptable but it should probably be chips and dips rather than a full blown meal. I have had pasta and even a roast dinner in front of the race before, but it can be a bit distracting.

What about the live timing screen do you have that up?

I have been using the live timing screen since last year. I often think while using it about how much I must have been missing before.

Do you allow talking about non race subjects?

A couple of races ago there were some people who attempted it. I was able to drown them out by shouting at the television

Do you allow talking at all?

I'm a nightmare I keep complaining vocally, about James mainly.

Can I just say that my preferences are virtually exactly the same? I try to watch everything live, but of course sometimes things get in the way. I even try occasionally to follow the practice sessions live - there's no other way, I don't think, to get lap by lap times.

And inevitably sometimes I'm with people who will talk about non-related topics, which is annoying, but ok for a minute or two.

Do you watch qualifying?

Yes

Do you watch the race?

Yes

Do you watch both of them live?

Not usually and when I watch the qualifying I usually run the player at one and a half times normal speed... just to keep it exiting!

Even if they're really early in the morning?

You must be kidding... 7.00am is earliest.

What do you do about food and drink?

Drinks suitable for the time of day are welcome but food is less common.

Is food acceptable during the race?

I don't have a problem with it... just does not seem to work out that way.

What about the live timing screen do you have that up?

I have looked at it but... If I'm watching live I tend to have the TV in the living room on and the PC in the kitchen also showing the TV picture... this facilitates going to the kitchen for tea, beer etc without missing anything. The ideal would be to be able to record the live timing and then be able to synchronize with watching the recording... Over to the techno department please...

Do you allow talking about non race subjects?

In this house all topics are permitted, including phone calls, that’s why it's on in two rooms or watched as a recording.

Do you allow talking at all?

It's easier than passing notes or sign language.

Additional Question: If you watch the qualifying or the race from a recording do you mind if you know what the outcome was? How do you keep from knowing it?

It is essential not to know; otherwise it's hardly worth watching. So a radio and TV blackout is required, all phone calls have to start with 'If you have seen the Grand Prix, don't tell me what the result is' and caution has to be taken when buying or reading newspapers. The newspaper problem is currently much worse because Hamilton is 'Front Page' news.
