Something for the Weekend?
I don't know about you, but I feel that there is something missing from this weekend. It's been two weeks since Australia, and I'm ready for another Grand Prix. How about you? This whole 'three weeks' thing seems to be getting out of hand. I have a vague, and probably inaccurate, memory of there only being one three week break in the summer in the old days. Now there seem to be far too many long breaks: there is almost a month from Bahrain to Spain, then three weeks after Hungary. In place of this we also seem to have more races within a week of each other, when it used to be just Britain and France. I think I'd prefer every two weeks, rather than randomly short and long periods. But what are we supposed to do on weekends like this? The F1 fan's brain begins to get nervous, he starts to sweat, he sits on his sofa on Sunday afternoon watching a blank screen for two hours. Something needs to be done to help these poor people.

They seem to have stretched the season when it went up to 19 races that time, and then have basically allowed the gaps to arrive back any time a race drops down. I think it's the way that Bernie is trying to make it as obvious as possible to the teams that they may as well run a 20 race season.
But yeah. In an ideal world I'd let them have 2 months off for Christmas, and the three weeks in the summer. That would mean 9 weekends of no planned races. The rest of the year would be for the fortnightly spectacle. That means 21.5 races only 1.5 more Bernie wants. Clearly this is the way to go. I do think a proper off season is worth while even though I resent it when it's happening. It provides a clear break. But if we actually had 22 races. Then we would end up with 8 weeks off in the winter, 1 three week break in the summer, but one back to back race. This used to always be Canada and the US as I remember it, but it doesn't really matter where it is. 22 races has a certain symmetry because there are 22 drivers. Sounds good to me.
