A Conservative Party

Renault’s party on Sunday night must have been muted. They’ve won, but not quite yet. They can celebrate, almost. All they have to do next weekend is play it safe, but playing it safe is a very dangerous policy. Alonso has to drive aggressively, otherwise he could easily have an accident, or fall off the road. Remember 2003? Michael had to score one point, and Kimi had to win the race. In the end, Rubens won the race preventing that eventuality from even happening, but Michael had huge problems scoring that one point. Will it be the same for Alonso?

Incidentally, if Michael had won this year (and he still might) then he’d have won the championship as many times as he’s lost it (8 wins, 8 losses). I think that’s the incredible statistic he was aiming for. Now, however, it will be 9 losses, 7 wins. Not quite so good. Alonso is 2 wins, 3 losses. Not bad for a rookie. I remember Michael saying he’d give up when someone came along to challenge him. Do you think he’s finally accepted Alonso is that man?

Comments:
The Newbie's view, on hearing that Alonso only needed one point, was to suggest that Michael would task his teammate Massa with blocking/taking out Alonso, but I suppose that would involve team orders which I also gather is a no-no (officially!)

But does anyone else consider that it could be his final dastardly act in F1??

I don't think he thinks Alonso is that man in some ways. I understand that he respects that Alonso is good, but that he still thinks he can beat him. It may in fact be Kimi he fears. Kimi was the first to come close to beating him. And I think that it was soon after that that Jean Todt went and tried to hire him.

The fact that they might beat him sometimes on the track wouldn't probably be the thing that made Michael worried, and I don't think last seasons win by Alonso really made him respect him either as he felt it was Ferrari who lost it rather than Renault who won it.

But I think it was the moment Ferrari started distablising the team arround him to find his replacement. Massa being the Jean's son's client. Kimi being brought in. These things must have been the signs that he knew it was time. It wasn't his enemies saying he was finished that he feared it was his friends.
